Where to Do Your Holiday Shopping Near Luminary: Christmas Village in Baltimore

Posted December 10th, 2019

Happening now through Dec. 24,  Christmas Village in Baltimore is a seasonal market providing a variety of traditional European food, drinks, and decorations sold from 50 vendors from all over the world. Located at West Shore Park in the Inn Harbor, the indoor-outdoor event is fashioned after the Christkindl Market in Nuremberg, Germany. This market is rooted in the folklore of the Christkind,  which features an appointed “angel” dressed in robes of gold and white with a crown upon her head. It is said that this representation is similar to the U.S. version of Santa Claus.

Holiday charm is found in the traditional German-style wooden huts and atmosphere complete with decorated trees, twinkling lights, and the sweet smells of gingerbread and bratwurst to ward off the cold.  Along with seasonal shopping, the market provides events and live performances that make gathering around with family and friends a fun social activity.

The opening of the festival was done by a ceremony that features the original Christkind selected to represent the spirit of the season in Nuremberg, Germany and is one of two Christmas markets in the U.S. where she makes an appearance.
